Discovery Semiconductors receives PhAST/Laser Focus World Innovation Award Honorable Mention

Ewing, NJ - May 31, 2007

Discovery Semiconductors, Inc. has received the PhAST/Laser Focus World Innovation Award Honorable Mention for creating the first commercial ultra-fast 10 Gb/s coherent optical receiver system. The Innovation Awards Program is an annual competition open to CLEO exhibitors for products released in the previous 12 months.

The award was presented on May 10th 2007 during the CLEO conference held in Baltimore, Maryland. The Coherent Systems’ Manager, Mr. Don Becker, explained, “Coherent detection will be an enabling technology for the next generation of high speed optical receivers. The ability to detect amplitude, phase, and polarization simultaneously plus the linear transformation of the electric field of the optical signal into the electrical domain are huge advantages over conventional direct detection.”

Kitty Hawk is the first high speed (10 Gb/s) optical coherent detection system to be commercialized. Although optical coherent detection was widely investigated in the late 1980’s, the complexity of building these systems has been a technical challenge. Discovery’s engineers have successfully built and commercialized such a system.

“This recognition is the culmination of years of hard work. Without the generous support of the United States government and its scientists, such an endeavor would have never gotten off the ground.” said Abhay Joshi, President and CEO of Discovery Semiconductors.

Discovery Semiconductors is an industry leader in manufacturing ultrafast, high optical power handling InGaAs photodetectors, radio frequency over fiber optical receivers, balanced optical receivers and several other custom products for applications ranging from analog RF links to ultrafast digital communications.
